Classic Weekend

Another thing on our "To Do in 2013" list was a weekend trip to the Classic City! This is a busy time of year for Athens, but I think we managed to choose the one weekend when nothing else was going on. We headed over yesterday morning and made it in time for a late-ish lunch downtown at Taco Stand.

It was a little cooler than we expected it to be but sunny. Still, it was perfect weather for taking a walk around campus! We started on North Campus (of course), which is pretty in any weather.

Then we headed down to Tate to check out all the new stuff and to revisit some of the old stuff. It's still a little weird to walk around campus as a visitor, knowing how many (many) times we walked the same sidewalks as students! Cue the nostalgia.

Yep...still there!

If you're wondering how the chairs at the SLC are holding up, the answer is...poorly.

After awhile, we headed back downtown for some browsing and a little hotel nap before going out for dinner and drinks.

One of my favorite views in Athens!
Andrew got me a Jamie Calkin print of it for Christmas.

I think we have gone to Speakeasy on most of our trips back to Athens. We didn't go all that frequently when we lived in Athens, but Andrew pointed out that we did go on a few special occasions. Add in the fun of it being all-upstairs and having a view of North Campus, and it always seems like a good choice when we visit. (Also, hello spinach-dip-in-a-bread-bowl.)

When we finished filling out our tapas order card, the waitress looked at it and said, "Okay...we usually recommend two per person, so...you two probably don't need seven things..." We had just ordered our "usual." Oops.

After we finished all seven things, including white chocolate fondue for dessert, our waitress apologized for doubting us. ;)

I wish I could say we went out and relived the bar scene after dinner, but we felt decidedly old and acted it when we concluded that the hotel bed and TV sounded like a much more attractive option. At least our room had a pretty view of the sunset! (And no, it wasn't even dark yet...)

However, our senior citizen bedtime allowed us to get up early enough to make it to one of our all-time brunch favorites before the lines formed!

Last Resort is still as good (and cheap!) as we remembered, and it was fate for us to visit today. They had a brand-new, uncut cappuccino cheesecake with praline topping! My most favorite dessert ever in life.

It was a sweet (ha ha) way to end our Athens visit. They're never long enough, because I think we both secretly end up wanting to just stay there forever.

Happy Sunday!

College Gameday

Yesterday was a different kind of college gameday for us. Instead of starting on North Campus, we started at Atlantic Station. :) It was a really pretty day, so we decided to head over there for lunch/shopping and to check out the Final Four festivities that were going on.

ESPN was filming live from Central Park, and the Gameday bus was showing some Bulldog pride! Go Dawgs!

We got to watch part of the broadcast right before we left. We were right behind the desk, so we may have gotten five seconds of fame out of the trip. ;)

Then instead of dinner from Peppino's or some other Athens gameday staple, we classed it up a little and went to Murphy's in the Highlands. We sat near the open patio doors and didn't freeze! There was a mirror directly across from our table -- but the full length of the restaurant away. So I spent the meal staring at a tiny version of us.

We rounded out the night with what was considered the most important game at our house, and it wasn't in the Final Four. It was the Braves, duh! I hope the Upton brothers could hear Andrew yelling for them from Midtown.

It seems like spring just might be here to stay, and we welcome it with open (short-sleeved) arms!
